Almost every VPS on the market is sold with the same line in the specs: a 1 Gbps port. Here is what that number actually describes, what it does not promise, and which figures you can safely plan around.

The port is a ceiling, not a reservation

Your VPS lives on a physical server, and that server is connected to the network with very fast uplinks. The "up to 1 Gbps" figure describes the speed of the virtual network interface of your VPS: this is the maximum the interface can push at any given moment.

It is a ceiling, the same way a motorway speed limit is a ceiling. It does not mean every car drives at the limit around the clock, and it does not need to: traffic on a server is extremely bursty. A page loads, a backup uploads, an update downloads, and then the line goes quiet again.

Why sharing works so well

At any given second, the vast majority of servers on a node transmit almost nothing. Statistically, dozens of virtual machines can comfortably share fast uplinks precisely because their peaks almost never align. When your VPS needs the full pipe for a burst, the pipe is almost always free to give it.

This is the same principle your home provider uses, and the same one mobile networks use. Dedicated, contractually guaranteed bandwidth exists in the industry, but it is a separate product with a very different price tag: a guaranteed gigabit between two European cities costs hundreds of euros per month at wholesale, before you add the server itself.

What you can actually count on

  • Bursts run at interface speed. Downloads, deploys, backups and page loads use the full available bandwidth.
  • Day-to-day traffic is unmetered. We do not count gigabytes and there is no monthly cap to watch.
  • Sustained saturation is smoothed. If one VPS occupies the channel at maximum for a long stretch, our fair-use system temporarily lowers its ceiling so the neighbours stay fast. The details are in the fair-use article.

How to check what you are getting
